The Springfield-Washington County Economic Development Authority (SWEDA) was formed in the late 1990s, after community leaders realized that having a part-time development authority wouldn’t attract the industry that Springfield/Washington County needed to stay vital, much less grow.
Since that time, SWEDA has transformed into a collaborative organization between the City of Springfield and Washington County. Each entity appoints three board members to make up the six-member board of directors. SWEDA employs a full time Executive Director to manage the day-to-day operations and carry out the mission of the organization as set forth by the board of directors.
The agency has three main tasks: recruit new industry, retain existing industry, and provide workforce development. Over the past 20 years, the community’s industrial base has diversified and those efforts will continue.
