Location: Washington County Public Library Starting Salary: $12.00/hr.
Job Summary
Part-time position (20 hrs. per week) requires work with school age children (13 and up)
and adults (18 and over) to meet their programming wants and needs. Proficiency with
computers and social media is a plus. Duties include creating, presenting and evaluating
programs for the public, communicating or marketing program information to the
public through written brochures, social media, and other means, and data input.
Reference and reader’s advisory services, work public service desk, collection
development and maintenance may also be required. Reports to the Head Programming
Librarian.
Specific Duties
o Assists in the development, presentation and evaluation of library programs and
classes for teens and adults.
o Assists with collection development, selection and weeding of materials in the
adult fiction and non-fiction.
o Scheduled on a public services desk to provide library services to meet the
educational, recreational and informational needs of the community, with
particular emphasis on Adult services.
o Assists and trains patrons in the use of public access catalog, Internet, Microsoft
Office and other library resources.
o Creates flyers, brochures, bulletin boards and displays to promote and motivate
increased use of library services, materials, programs and activities.
o Communicate program information to the public through social media and other
means.
o Attends workshops and educational meetings relating to programming services.
o Consistently presents Washington County Public Library and its services in a
positive manner.
General Duties
o Providing library services to meet the educational, recreational and informational
needs of the community.
o Checks in returned books and materials.
o Sorts, alphabetizes, shelves, files, and retrieves library materials.
o Registers new users through computer system; issues and renews cards.
o Updates patron records regarding Internet use, expiration dates, fines, etc.
o Calls patrons regarding requested materials.
o Checks out, discharges, and renews in person and over the telephone all library
materials.
o Maintains order and neatness in the collection.
o Alphabetizes, files, and performs clerical tasks with neatness and precision.
o Answers directional and basic reference questions.
o Assists patrons in locating materials, accompanying them to the stacks when
possible or appropriate.
o Answers incoming calls, handles patron requests or problems and/or directs calls
to correct extensions.
o Operates office and automated equipment.
o Assists with opening and closing procedures of the library.
o Explains interlibrary loan service and takes requests.
o Maintains good relations with public and staff.
o Maintains order at the circulation desk; neat and orderly public areas throughout
the library.
o Explains library’s circulation policies.
o Follows procedures consistently.
o Provides users with general information about library services directing them to
other personnel as needed either in person or on the telephone.
o Assists patrons with library equipment and related software (i.e. copier,
microfilm reader/printer, computers, Internet, etc.).
o Applies library rules and regulations.
o Works scheduled shift at the circulation desk.
o Participates in meetings as required.
o Attends in-service workshops, meetings and conferences as appropriate.
o Consistently presents Washington County Public Library and its services in a
positive manner.
o Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
o General knowledge of the library’s services and collections
o Ability to use the library’s automated circulation system and online catalog
o Good interpersonal and communication skills, in person and by phone
o Knowledge of and commitment to excellent customer service
o Able to maintain composure while handling customer complaints
o Able to work cooperatively and collaboratively with customers and staff to
achieve results
o Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
o Ability to quickly and accurately sort by alphabetical, numerical, chronological, or
Dewey Decimal order
o Ability to see, read, and understands titles, call numbers, and dates
o Able to stand, walk, and use hands to perform tasks the majority of the work day
o Ability to manipulate loaded book carts, reaches shelves, and handles library
materials
o Able to accurately make change and receipt income
o Ability to operate a telephone, FAX, copier, printer, and other office equipment
o Flexible, adaptable, and able to flourish in a changing environment
o Dependable, motivated self-starter able to work a flexible schedule, including
evenings and weekends.
Education, Training, and Experience
High school diploma or GED, postsecondary education preferred. Experience with
public service, programming or marketing experience a plus. Comfortable with current
and potential technology. Must also be comfortable interacting with patrons of all ages
and backgrounds.
This position also requires the attainment of a Paraprofessional Certificate from the
Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives within the first five years of
employment, and the ability to maintain certification during the duration of
employment with the Library. KDLA provides four routes to take to fulfill requirements

Must be over 18. Background check required.
The person in this position must be comfortable working scheduled daytime, evening
and Saturday hours.
